How do I get rid of the map on Ancestry.ca?
« on: Tuesday 24 August 21 02:52 BST (UK) »
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I've just signed up to Ancestry.ca and when I try to view a province-specific list of records there's a huge map taking up the left half of my computer screen. I've figured out how to make the map take up the entire screen but can't see an option for getting rid of the map! (I've used Ancestry.com and haven't had a map pop up when I've selected a state.)

Please help!

Thank you,
Josephine

Its magic!!!

Google "how turn off the map pop up in Ancestry"

or

Go to "Preferences" turn off the "Hint" feature.

If that doesn't work send their help desk an email; light some candles and enjoy a bottle Shiraz while you wait for their response.

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

The Google search result is:
"No results found for 'how turn off the map pop up in Ancestry.'"

And I don't see anything about hints on the "preferences" page.

I can't find an answer in the "help" search engine.

I was hoping someone in Canada had already encountered this and knew how to get rid of it.

Thanks anyway.

I think it appears on whatever version of Ancestry you have. I have a world sub and I tried to get a version of what you get. It just appears on the Search page that comes up first if you scroll down and select a country. The way yo get rid of it is to click the X in the top corner of the map. Otherwise just complete teh search boxes at the top and don't  scroll down .

I've never scrolled down that far before.

Are you talking about the the "Explore by Location" map when you start Ancestry?

I just rejoined ancestry.ca (global) and that is the only map I have but it disappears when you search.

In my settings under preferences I turn all hints off.

The only other map I see is if you have the DNA App which I don't have.

This is what I get if I select Canada and zoom in. I don't use this option but I think this is what Josephine must be referring to.

Reduced size

This is what I get which is at the bottom left not very large.  But as soon as you start a search it disappears.

So I skyped the wife, she logged in on our PC in Fife and has the same map as I do which means it is not tied to an IP address.

As I mentioned all my preferences regarding hints are off.

My sub is global not just Canada so you would think I would get a world map.  However, if you have DNA through Ancestry (which I do not), perhaps it changes the map...just a guess.  The other possibility is it grabbing details from an old account and therefore doesn't see you as a Canuck so you get North America.

I still like my idea of sending an email to Ancestry and cracking open a bottle of Shiraz.

Don

Edit and I don't have the "See more about Canada" panel

Yes, exactly the same as mine, apart from me just zooming in on the east side (and reducing the size so it fits the page  :P  ;D).

I've never bothered with it, although I've got tons of ancestral kin over there. It gives a map of whatever continent your selected country  is on.

Just ignore it, Josephine.

Hi,

I must admit, I have never scrolled down far enough to encounter the map!!   Even thought I have been using Ancestry.ca for years!!   Out of curiosity, I had a look to see if I can find what you are having difficulty with.....

I can see the map under "Explore by Location".   When you select a Province, you see a large map, with a list of province specific records on the right hand side.

To get rid of the map, just select one of the record sets from the list.   The map goes away and the search page for that record set appears.   At least, that is what happened for me.   :)
