I may be wrong but it looks like Sarah Jane HYDES/HIDES born Derbyshire married Richard DAVIS 1861.
They have 5 children last born 1873.

By 1881 he says he is widowed.

She takes up with Alfred Short c 1876 and he leaves her 1890.
1891 Sarah and children of her and Alfred are under Davis in the workhouse.

Ellen married under Davis 1906 to John WOODCOCK.
I cant post 1911 details but Bertie is with them

A tree on Ancestry shows Ellen Louisa with Sarah Jane as her mother but shows her father as a George Hall?   Plus where on earth does the surname 'Dayken' come from?

Just to be sure, the marriage notice for Alfred John SHORT in 1891 in Sydney says that his father is John SHORT of Frome, Somerset. Are you sure that the Alfred SHORT in the 1881 (born Brentford, Middlesex) is the right man?

Probable baptism at Frome of Alfred John SHORT (parents John and Susan) on 17 May 1857.

Yes, they are the same person.  He's been tracked using records.  His father worked on the railway and the moved a lot.

This does makes sense to me as I have Davis DNA matches who were some how related to the Shorts, but I couldn't find a connection.  And they were blacksmith! :-)

It was the Maiden Name of the Mother on Ellen Louisa Short's birth record on FindMyPast.

They have plucked a HYDES/HALL marriage in Ireland out of thin air so ignore that.

It was the Maiden Name of the Mother on Ellen Louisa Short's birth record on FindMyPast.

The question is about why Sarah Jane was using that name, not where you saw it.
