Simmons of Berkshire
« on: Friday 27 August 21 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am helping a friend with their tree and would like to make sure that I am on the right track with this gentleman - Frederick Simmons born c1871.  Unfortunately, there are quite a few with that name and year of birth in Berkshire.

The one I am following marries Harriet Emma Derbyshire in Westminster in 1891 and ends up living in Wigan, putting Welford as his place of birth in 1881 and Newbury on others.  Although registered on the GRO as just Frederick, he gains the initial J in 1881 but not elsewhere, so I am wondering if anyone has access to his baptism records - I'm pretty sure that his parents are Henry and Emily (nee Herbert) Simmons.

I hope this all makes sense.   Any guidance would be gratefully received.  Thank you.  Royd,

Freebmd marriage 1891 shows him as Frederick Thomas Simmonds/Simmons

Buying a copy of the 1891 marriage cert will confirm his fathers name

Welford came under the Newbury RD.  Have you already discounted the 1871 birth on freebmd?

If not discounted - Have you checked his mmn using GRO online?

..... he gains the initial J in 1881 but not elsewhere

It is a 'T' not a 'J' - compare it to the other handwriting on the page.

Thank you for your help everyone.  He is also buried as Frederick Thomas Simmons in Wigan in 1944 along with his 2nd wife Elizabeth.  I am just wondering if he acquired the second name Thomas at his baptism as often happens in the RC church.  He is married and buried according to the rites of the C. of E. though.

Henry and Emily, hopefully his parents, are married in 1859 in Newbury so I may have to buy their marriage cert to see if it took place in an RC church.

Thank you again.  Royd.

There is a tree on Ancestry which shows parents as above but has him as Frederick J  and marrying Mary Ann Alice White in 1894.

There is no 1894 marriage recorded  - it was 1893 in Hungerford ::)

You may want to contact the tree owner
