Henry Thomas LOXTON. Any other footprints in New Zealand?
« on: Saturday 28 August 21 03:25 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Came across this enquiry made by the parents of Henry Thomas Loxton.

Missing Friends: [Appears just over half way down the page.]

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD18920805.2.36?end_date=31-12-1892&items_per_page=10&phrase=2&query=missing+friends&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1892&title=ESD

Arrival of the 'Buckinghamshire'…….

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD18740530.2.14?end_date=31-12-1875&query=buckinghamshire&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1874

Only death found but age out by 10 years.:

1922/8469   Loxton   Henry Thomas   58Y

Birth Mar 1854   ??

Loxton    Henry Thomas        E London
 1c   14

I find many of the appeals made through "Missing Friends" to be heart rending. In this case Henry's parents had not heard from him for 10 years.  :'(

There seem to be 2 Henry Thomas LOXTON in electoral rolls in 1890. One in Rangitikei, a farmer at Kiwitea. The other at Masterton, a settler at Alfredton.

And also in various other electoral rolls, though 1890 is the only year I see the 2 names. The Henry at Masterton seems to be there until c1900, then at Bay of Islands, Northland.

There is also this ad from his sister in 1908:

It is an unusual surname so in the finding of two with the same Christian names, one would think they must be related?

[Just noticed your new reply Maddy. I had missed that advert.]

I'm not sure how the electoral roll worked at that time, maybe there was just the one man and he hadn't "unenrolled" from one location, or his moving hadn't been recorded properly? Seems strange to have 2 with the same, as you say fairly unusual name.  :-\

One of these birth entries could be that of the "youngest sister"........

There is an A F LOXTON (40) immigrated to New Zealand in 1903, but she is "Mrs A F Loxton", housewife on the passenger list, seems to be alone. I can see her in the 1901 census with her parents, but not after that.  :-\

I would say there is a possibility that she could be the sister. Too much of a coincidence otherwise?
