"Black's Surnames!" has this name as not uncommon in the 15th & 16th century Scotland, a Morice Unthank in Lanarkshire in the late 13th cent', also later in Edinburgh, St Andrews etc derive from that place in Lanark.
 Later Unthanks are derived from an estate of that name on the left bank of the Rule Water.
 "A worthy Scot of that name was a hotel-keeper in Paris during the Commune,1871!"
