Hi when researching this previously I did come across a James Stevenson that married a Percival Evelinan in 1902 at Smith Falls, Glasgow.  She then remarried eg Evelinan Stevenson to a William Code in Smiths Falls, Lanark in 1917 (so two years after James had died).  I just wondered if this was a first marriage.  I think I found a child called Irene but can't find my documents for that now.  I also found a shipping list to Canada.  Not sure if any of this is related but just thought worth sharing.

...Where can I find his records for the Royal Scots Fusilers?  Is there any service number?...

There was no service no. showing on the index, just the details I posted. Hopefully enough details there for you to find his papers on Fold3 given this is where the info came from.

Margaret Dunlop was indeed married to the right John Stevenson. Her 1906 death shows her as the wife of John Stevenson, butcher.

Fiona, there are lots of bits of info flying about! You are going to have to sit and put them in some order I would suggest.

Another bit for you. Regarding brother William, there is this possible lead:

William Stevenson
Birth 15 Jan 1881 Kilmarnock, Scotland
Service Number: WW1 26/973
New Zealand, World War I Service Records, 1914-1920 (Ancestry)

He showed as 3 weeks old on the transcript on Ancestry in 1881. Should this be 3 months perhaps? 1881 census date was 3 April.

Added: There is some info online connecting this William to another family www.geni.com/people/William-Stevenson/6000000009399215463 This William was not born until after the 1881 census. He shows in 1891 with family. Maybe a death registration or his marriage in 1903 in NZ showed these parents?

Thanks Monica.  I have previously come across William Stevenson in New Zealand but the only information it gave was that he was born in Kilmarnock.  Nothing connecting the families as yet.  Thanks for all your help (and everyone else), it has really helped.  As you say a lot of bits to pick up on.

Monica, please see attached records for William Stevenson in New Zealand.  I have many records with the same name but just not sure if they are the right ones or not!

It looks like both James & brother, William, both fought in the Boer War. After the War, James stayed on in S.A. but William carried on to New Zealand.

Added: There is also a possibility that father, John, also served. All 3 names come up as having served in the Boer War.
