Mary Cripps abt 1766 - Baptism record
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 07:56 BST (UK) »
Good Morning

I'm looking for help please. I'm trying to trace a baptism record for Mary Cripps, so as to be able  identify her parents.

The only information I have at present is what I believe to be her marriage record. There is a misspelling of the surname 'Stockly' it is normally 'Stockley' with an 'e'.

Name:   Richard Stockly
Gender:   Male
Marriage Date:   26 Aug 1798
Marriage Place:   Padbury,Buckingham,England
Spouse:   Mary Cripps

FHL Film Number:   1042396

I think Mary's birth was around 1766 (not exactly sure where i got that from now)

Thanks for your help

Regards

Pegwill

Marriage transcript notes that they were both of the parish and the witnesses were Edwd Morris &  Robert Mall.  The marriage was by Licence.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi rosie99

Thanks for coming back so quick.

Do you have a copy of the transcript I could have or can you point me to where I might get one?
Thanks

Buckinghamshire Records Office may or may not hold a copy of the Bond and/or Allegation for this marriage.  Worth a try as the documents often hold further information, such as ages, occupations etc.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Mary Cripps was 24, at the time the Marriage Bond was granted. 25th Aug 1798.  b.o.t.p. of Padbury.

So an approx. birth year of 1774.

Taken from Bucks Bonds list. From Buckinghamshire Records Office.

Hi

After quite a bit of research I am still unable to locate a baptism record showing Mary Cripps mother and father.

One line of thought I'm trying to progress is that Mary was married previously, hence the reason for the Marriage License. While she may have been young to be a widow (born 1774 married 1798) making her only 24 it is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Having said that I'm not really sure where to start, assuming that Mary at the time of her wedding in 1798 was using her previous name (Cripps), does anybody have any suggestions of how I might find out what her Maiden name might have been before that marriage.

Thanks for your help

Normally marital status(Widower or Widow), would be included in a marriage Bond, as a significant amount of money would be required for the purchase of the Bond.

In the Bucks marriage Bond list there are plenty of Widowers and Widows mentioned.

A monetary pledge or guarantee given to the court by the intended groom and a bondsman to affirm that there was no moral or legal reason why the couple could not be married and also that the groom would not change his mind.

Have you contacted BucksFHS for baptism search for Mary Cripps.  https://www.bucksfhs.org.uk/

Also BucksFHS are on facebook.
