Re: "Woodbridge" sick list - NSW 1838

WOW Thank you very much!  Editing to say that after looking up the info I have on my James, the ages don't match at all... but I'm keeping an open mind.

He married a convict in Australia and was listed on their 1838 permission to marry as being 29 and coming free per Woodbridge.

So anyone not on the passenger list who then appeared on the sick list must be crew.  Are there many?  Sounds like a lot of those on board were ill that trip.

Thanks so much :)

Leigh

Hello again Michael,
I haven't forgotten about John Biffin but my visit
to our local history centre proved fruitless as their
shipping records date from 1839 so  just miss
out by a few months and I will have to look
further afield in the coming weeks.

Thanks Shadrach,
Maybe the reocrds are only available through the NSW State Records Office. One office in the Rocks which I've visited and another in the western Suburbs (tried to check the address but the site is presently down).
Thanks again
Michael.

Shradrach,
Sorry to have missed the boat (to coin a phrase) but I've only just discovered this site!

Like others I too have a suspicion that my ancestor Peter Andrews may have travelled with his relatives Abraham and Sarah Andrews aboard the Woodbridge in 1838. He seems to have disappeared around this time leaving behind his wife and family in Wiltshire.

Any chance you could check the records in your possession once again for this name - perhaps he was also taken on board as crew rather than for an assisted passage.

Regards,
Zorba

Hello Zorba,
You haven't missed the boat, it's a very
slow one, so I'll look for your people too.

Hello again Zorba

While I still have not had a chance to look at the
original ship's passenger list I did look at
the Surgeon's Sick List of which I have a copy.

No Peter Andrews listed as sick but these members of the Andrews
family are listed -

George Andrews
Jane Andrews (she show up twice)
Abr. Andews  &
Mrs Andrew

Maybe we will be lucky with the microfilm.

Shadrach,
Brilliant thanks - I should of course have asked you to check all the Andrews entries - so thanks for being one step ahead here!

It seems that all these Andrews are probably related to Peter directly or indirectly so with all the information at my fingertips perhaps I shall be able to work out what is going on!

Regards,
              Richard

Could not find either John Biffin or
Peter Andrews in the passenger list.

There is an entry for what looks like "Thms or
ThL. Baffin"
Native of W.Lavany? Wiltshire
Son of John Biffin of the same place
Farm Labourer
44 years in Aug.1838
Very Good Health
Church of England
Cannot Read or Write

Is he yours?

Hello Shadrach
Yes, Thms Baffin is my Thomas Biffin of West Lavington "Cannot read or write". The Biffin's are all of humble ag labourer stock and explains the corruption of the surname Beaven/Beavan/Biffon/Biffan/Biffin etc etc

It's fantastic that you were able to check the shipping records for us, the confirmation that John Biffin was not on the ship is what I was looking for.

A BIG THANK YOU
Michael
