James Thomas b 5 Nov 1870 Haverfordwest Union Workhouse
« on: Friday 03 September 21 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hello, I wonder if anyone here can help me with the early life of my wife's great grandfather James Thomas?

James Thomas was born on 5 Nov 1870. His birth certificate shows that he was born in Haverfordwest Union Workhouse and his mother was Ann Thomas, a domestic servant. No father is shown so he was probably illegitimate.

Later in his life James moved to Manchester an I have records for him from the 1901 and 1911 censuses and the 1939 register as well as his marriage and death certificates.

I have been searching the 1871 census for him without any luck. Nor can I find any census records for the Haverfordwest Union Workhouse in 1871. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks, Mike

Thank you Rosie, that may well be him in 1881. If so his mother seems to be elsewhere.

I was hoping to find him in the 1871 census, but I haven't been able to find any records for the Workhouse using Ancestry.

Does anyone know if the Workhouse records at the Records Office are likely to show his birth and/or discharge dates or anything else that might help me?

thanks

Have you found his Mother in later years ?
I would think the records for the workhouse would have his birth year and his admission date and discharge date ..I don't see any on Ancestry or Find my Past either  ???

Thank you for looking Rosie. No I don't have any information about his mother. All I have about her is her name and occupation as a Domestic Servant from James' birth certificate. Too little to go on to find anything conclusive for her.

James' birth certificate shows that he was actually born in the Workhouse so I am hoping there might be something else about him in the workhouse records.

There are a few with the surname Thomas on the 1871 /1881 census as inmates but hard to say if there is any connection
