I was thinking of renewing my subscription but surely they are breaking the law by preventing me from managing the cookie preferences

(Assuming you are in the UK) here is the ICO guidance. As I understand it, you have to be told what cookies are being set and why; you do not have to be given the option to manage which cookies are set.

Don't know about the legal stance or about their sites in other countries but Ancestry UK certainly allow you to manage your cookies or change/review your cookie preferences at any time
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/legal/aboutcookies

scroll down to How do I manage my Cookies and there is a link to the page where you can review/change your preferences.

If you don't use Ancestry UK, then look at the bottom of the home screen and click on cookies to get to your particular site's cookie policy etc as above?

Boo
