Looking for missing Albert Leonard New b. 1883 Newbury, Berkshire
« on: Wednesday 08 September 21 01:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone could assist me please with this search.   My Great Uncle Albert Leonard New was born in 1883 Newbury and have found him in Newbury up until 1912.  He was living with his Uncle John New and his wife Fanny in 1911 census, just before they migrated to Australia in 1912 to Sydney. He had been married, his wife Fanny was in the Choseley Mental Home near Newbury and he had a son Roy Leslie Townsend New whom we have found was sent to Canada as a Home Child. His wife Fanny New died in 1914.   We have searched records and cannot find him coming to Australia with John & Fanny New.   His occupation at 1911 census was then a Painter.

Of late we have found an Albert New born around the same time as our Great Uncle living at Perth Western Australia with wife Violet Beatrice New at 31 Gill Street, he was then a Builder with two sons Charles Richard New a Carpenter b. 1915 and Gerald Frank New b. 1917.  Both sons are now deceased, they were buried at Karrakatta, and  we believe that Albert's  wife Violet New died in 1978.

At this stage have not found any shipping records for Albert coming to Australia, we believe that he married Violet in Australia.   Maybe Albert had changed his name for some reason with the shipping records.      We have found records of both Albert & Violet having travelled to the UK on a holiday around the 1950's.    Have been unable to find Albert & Violet's marriage.

Would really appreciate any assistance to confirm that this could be our missing man.   We really need some closure on this, and if this is our man, may confirm some DNA matches that we have of New descendants in Western Australia.

Thanking you - Jan

If we could find Albert New's arrival in Australia, would be absolutely great.  Thank you for the info now.

Arriving Fremantle 3 july 1901 onboard “Perthshire” from London, is a Mr. A. (I? Or J?) NEW.
His name has been crossed out, so I am not sure what that means.

Added - sorry i see by your dates, that one will not be right.

If it is of use, this item gives a more precise date for the marriage NEW /TREMAIN
No earlier than November 1913

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/57813927

As the marriage to Violet was bigamous, it is likely he travelled under an assumed name.
From what you have said, he left his wife in the institution and was married in Perth before her death.

WRONG INFO. Struck through
There is one Albert CANNAN or CANNON  (b 1883) on the same voyage as Violet TREMAIN and her relatives.

Do you at all know that surname?

There is only a 12 month window for the Australian marriage between Violet's arrival and her marriage.
Whirlwind or pre-arranged? :o

We have found records of both Albert & Violet having travelled to the UK on a holiday around the 1950's.
Thanking you - Jan

Albert died in 1945.  So he could not have gone  to UK in 1950's

His age is not correct for your man. 71 years at both death notice and cremation details Karrakatta.
