Romany descent?
« on: Friday 10 September 21 18:08 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am sorting out lots of photographs ,papers etc.
My relatives ,children of my late mother’s siblings do ,tend to embellish information which can mislead.
The latest is in a letter sent by my cousin some time ago.
She stated that our grandmother was of Romany descent !
My mother who was full of wonderful stories about her family never said that.
Well the surname is Breckell, her mother’s name was Williamson .
From Manchester as far back as I have gone,Ashton and Chorlton on
Medlock.
I am dubious , surely my mother would have mentioned that.
Any suggestions welcome.
Viktoria.

No timescale given in your post.  There is an 1864 marriage on freebmd John William Breckell to Mary Williamson in Manchester

Marriage cert shows both John William & his father James as porters & Mary's father John  as a fustian cutter

Sorry, I did not mention that I have done quite a bit of the Breckell family history.
However, the thought that crossed my mind today when sorting out my notes - where a cousin had mentioned the Romany connection etc, was to try to find out despite my doubts .
Looked online at  Romany  surnames etc whilst I knew the family had various addresses in Manchester ,so when Breckell did not come I just thought I would ask RootsChat.
Yes they are my great grandparents ,my grandmother was born 1895 Margaret Ann .
Many thanks for your time and kindness .
The embellishing cousin would have it that one child of Margaret Ann died “ of a broken heart” —- no such thing exists.
Her death certificate say Haemoptysis- coughing up  blood ,from the mouth -in her case advanced Tuberculosis
She had fallen in love with a young Curate at church but he had no intention of marrying .On the rebound she married a very disturbed man ,badly injured in WW1 .
His treatment of her was a family tragedy ,shunning her and making her eat away from him ,keeping crockery ,cutlery and household linen separate .
In those days 1929’s that was advised ,but so cruelly done.
I must get his death certificate ,would be interesting to see what was his cause of death .
She was 29 when she died in 1929.
So many thanks again .
I am grateful for your time.
Viktoria.

Hi

Bit confused.  1871 shows Margaret Ann Breckell aged 6.  Married 1883 to Samuel Pomphrey.  She died 1932 aged 67.  Margaret's marriage cert confirms father as John William Breckell

No wonder you are confused —- typo —grandma born Fourth December 1864
Birth registered January 1865 ——- ::)
So a bit of a rush for her parents to get married - October 30th 1864.
Married Sam Pomphrey July 23 1883 aged 18 , Samuel was 19.
Thanks again ,sorry for the confusion .
