Secrets of longevity
« on: Friday 10 September 21 23:24 BST (UK) »
I've found several ancestors who attributed their longevity to drinking or not drinking but ggg-grandpa David Wa(i)re is the first I've found who credited a lifelong avoidance of scarves.

Any other good tips from long-lived ancestors?

The effeminate frippery of scarves!
It worked  -well  something did -
I think no tobacco and practically no,alcohol may have helped.

P.S.my maternal Grandfather who died aged almost 90 ,as a player in a Brass Band would have partaken of a drink or two !
Also a blacksmith for  Undertakers when hearses and carriages were horse drawn  ,hot thirsty work .
Also had twelve children .

I always remember seeing an interview with Jeanne Louise Calment on TV where she partly attributed her long life to chocolate and cigarettes.

She made herself daily fruit salads with bananas and oranges. She enjoyed chocolate, sometimes indulging in a kilogram (2.2 lb) per week. After the meal, she smoked a Dunhill cigarette and drank a small amount of port wine.

Even I couldn't eat a kilo of chocolate in a week but I guess I could try harder  ;D

With tongue firmly in cheek, I would have thought that the best way to achieve longevity was to not die.

I will admit to a glass of port each night, and a little chocolate, just not a kilo a week. That would last me about a month :'(

It's important to keep spry and active.  In 1876, David Ware was apprehended as part of a wide ranging poultry theft gang [hens, turkeys, geese and ducks] along with one of his sons and another man.  The newspaper reported his age as 89 but he was really only 86.  I was disheartened when I learned this, having up till then thought of David as one of the good Wares.

I don’t wear scarves either, there is hope! My great grandmother, who was 93 when she passed away, used to to say, “I didn’t get to this age putting up with nonsense”.

So no scarves and not tolerating nonsense.

My mother in law- (yes her again!)—- lived to 105!
She just did it to spite her son in law and possibly me too!

He who was married to her daughter who put a jelly to set and couldn’t find it
when her mother had taken it to set quickly in her refrigerator .

A good woman in many ways and she brought her sons up,well my husband
anyway ,to be a really good man ,I was very grateful to her for that.
Her early life had been very poor, but strong parenting and the family bond being their  defence against true poverty got them through.
It was said in a radio programme quite some time ago that plain simple food  eaten in a happy atmosphere of family  love was more beneficial than rich food eaten for example by a child in the nursery with nurse maids whilst their Mamma entertained guests in the drawing room.
She never drank alcohol, ate simply and had a zest for life and a very ( oooh how very) fiery character,no messing her about and no fuss or nonsense either.
No memory loss and still crocheting hideous tea cosies and loo roll covers for church bazaars  and presents!
Her mother was gentler but also a good woman, you know ,someone others turned to ,a stalwart in the neighbourhood and very kind ,not so outspoken as her daughter.
She it was who told me to let some callers in , they were Jehova’s Witnesses .
I bet you never thought they would beg to be let out —— but she matched them at every turn ,out quoted and referred to The Bible from memory.
Amazing ,I liked her very much.
Watching the cat with its kittens one evening when we were at m in law’s to be with great grandma , she said ,as one kitten did not want to be washed .
“ See, she will stand so much but in a minute she will give it a sharp tap to make  it lie  still,”.That happened.
G Grandma said -“ The odd smack does no harm if it is done in love , better a small smack before the adult loses their temper than a hard smack done in temper.Cats and dogs are good mothers, and they chastise when necessary .
Save your big guns ‘til last and hope to never use them.”
Oh how true .
She lived to be 87 only.
Her name was Sarah Ann ,” Seran “ to her family .
Tiny ,bird like .Used to buy a “ quartern  “of flour and two ounces of barm ( yeast) to bake every week.Familyof five children one baby died very young .
But I wander from the point ,sorry ,which was that my mother in law after living a very simple life lived to be 105.
Viktoria.

The mother of one of our churchgoers will be 103 tomorrow.  No idea what her secret for longevity is as I haven't asked.

She has only recently gone to live in a nursing home which was at the beginning of May this year.  Previous to that she lived on her own in her house.

No doubt we all hope to live a decent length of time and hopefully not have too much in the way of health problems.  We each have to take life as it comes and do our best to overcome any problems.
