Place in Armadale
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 09:02 BST (UK) »
Hello. I am wondering if someone with local knowledge (or good cursive reading) could please point me to at what place Isabella BELL (1864-1869) was born within Armadale. Number 606 on the attached image. It reads something like Linton's lane? Thank you.

Morning
I think it’s Lintons Land Armadale
It’s written as one word with an apostrophe.
The last letter is definitely a ‘d’

Hello

I agree that it's Linton's land.  It is likely to be a building rather than a place in its own right and would mean that at the time of Isabella's birth, or at some time before, the building was (or had been) owned by someone called Linton.

I've seen it a lot in my own research in the Scottish records around the same time.

Best wishes

Hello,

Just to update - a quick look at the Valuation Rolls on the ScotlandsPeople site confirms that a John Linton of Airdrie was the proprietor of several houses in Armadale at the time of the 1865 valuation roll.

For one of the entries associated with him, it states "2 houses" and under occupier it just states "various", whereas all the others have named tenants.  It's likely that the property listed with 'various' tenants is the one described on Isabella's birth certificate as Linton's Land.

Best wishes

Have had a look at the History of Armadale Association's publication "Armadale in Minutes" by Robert Kerr as it has a map showing some of the old place names. There is a Linton's Loan in East Main Street I would say it would have been at around 70 East Main Street. From 60 East Main Street was demolished around 1920 to make make way for the "1919" council housing.
