Two Soldiers of 13th King's Killed 25/04/1916 ?
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 15:25 BST (UK) »
Trying to help a Family discover how their Granddad Died in WW1
He was in 13th Btn King's Liverpool Regt as Pte 12090 Thomas Towey and Killed 25/04/1916
Yet Volume II of Everard Wyrall's History of the King's Liverpool Regt lists no action in April 1916 of the 13th Btn
Yet the Casualties list for the 13th for 1916/17 shows only 2 Deaths that day:-

Pte 21185 Joseph O'Brien Killed  25/04/1916
Pte 12090 Thomas Towey Killed 25/04/1916

Can anyone solve the mystery why please ?

The war diary doesn't reveal much, with the entry for 25th saying only: Left RC Farm at 7.30 pm and took over at K&L Trenches from 6th Northumberland Fusiliers of 50th Division.

The war diary for the 6th Northumberland Fusiliers says they were relieved by the 13th King's Liverpool on  24th April

The 13th were relieved about 9pm on the 29th by the 12th West Yorkshire, so it would seem he was probably in the trenches when he was killed.

Although there may have been no specific action, there will probably have been sporadic shelling, which seems likely explanation for his death.  It wasn't uncommon - my Great Uncle was KiA in the trenches when a shell hit his bunker.

I think jomot's idea of shelling is the most likely possibility.  Sniper fire might also be possible, or perhaps being hit when on night patrol in no man's land.

We can sometimes forget that soldiers were not only killed in action, missing in action, or died of sickness or disease, but also sometimes just unlucky by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Overlaying the sketch map from the diary with the
official map puts them in these trenches SW of Kemmel.
The trenches are not shown on the official map.
