Patterson, William - Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 17:51 BST (UK) »
Patterson, William shown on 1851 census Bishopwearmouth with wife Mary and three sons, Francis b.1843 approx, John b. 1844 approx. and Hugh b.1851.  All born in Scotland apart from baby Hugh born in Bishopwearmouth to mother Mary Mackie.  I cannot find out what happened to William, Mary, Francis or Hugh. William was allegedly a foreman at Mr. Ray's foundry.
I know all about John, born approx. 1842 (perhaps Aberdeen) who married Mary Jane Ibbitson in Sunderland 1861.  They had more than 5 children on 1891 census.  Mary Jane died 1898 and John remarried Annie Hewitt in 1900 at Sunderland, emigrating to Fernie, British Columbia after birth of their joint son Norman.  They returned to Sunderland about 1923 and John died 1935 South Hetton, Haswell, Sunderland.  I don't know when Annie died.
Help wanted to find William and Mary Patterson (the parents)  and Francis and Hugh Patterson (two of the three children).

Looking at the 1851 census you mention, William a Labourer born about 1821, Mary born about 1823, John & Francis present but not Hugh.

Hugh is indeed there, he's at the top of the next page. FS transcription is incorrect.

Hugh is in the census in Thornaby, Yorkshire with wife Susanna Atchinson, who he married in 1869

1871 - RG10/4901/13/20 - Hugh Patterson 20 b Sunderland
1881 - RG11/4863/10/13 - Hugh Patterson 28 b Sunderland
1891 - RG12/4020/6/6 (on the street where my Dad was born) - Hugh Patterson 40 b Sunderland
1901 - RG13/4588/47/36 - Hugh Pattison 50 born Scotland

By 1911 he's moved across the river to Stockton, Durham, claiming to have been born Aberdeen.  Surname is again Pattison.  He died in 1928 (as Hugh Patterson).

There is also a military attestation for what is probably him in  September 1878 aged 24 years & 11 months, service number 1750.  Joined at Sunderland but claims to have been born Stockton.  Discharged 1879 as unfit for further service.
