Grenadier Guards 1900-1920 abt
« on: Sunday 12 September 21 13:05 BST (UK) »
Finding Grenadier Guard William Arthur Baker, born Guildford 21 Dec 1882 to an unknown unmarried and enigmatic Grandmother (to us) Ellen Louise Baker. So, if found, William would be my uncle.
He is shown only on 1901 Census record, RG13, Piece 634, F57, Page12 as being in GG. In Caterham. But No Regiment, No service Number so quite untraceable without GG enlistment details. Age 19 in 1901, so likely ‘enlisted’ in 1900 when 18 y.o. Can anyone help me find him and what became of him?
I tried TNA whom I thought held details and who were remarkably unhelpful, just sending me to MOD but with no Regiment/service number could not go forward.

Surely, the Regiment is Grenadier Guards?

And a service number is not always required - the application form says "Date of Birth OR Service No".

As KGarrad says, you have the Regiment it’s the Grenadier Guards.

Born 1882, unless he continued serving after 1920, the MOD won’t have his records.

I believe some of the Guards Regiments may hold early records. So far he is not showing up in the  Military records, over 60% were lost in a fire in WW2.

Grenadier Guards website says all records transferred to MOD?

https://www.com/find-a-grenadier-ancestor

If that is the case, then as you say, full name and date of birth should suffice. Possibly including place of birth, to assist in search as they are inundated at the moment.

Thank you Jebber and KGarrard.

That was my understanding. That the records survived the warehouse bombing, as held by MoD in Glasgow and transferred to MoD in 2020.

I note in the 1901 Census all the records relate to ‘Trainees’ but does this mean they didn’t necessarily go on to enlist?

Will now go and check this website. Looks promising but won’t be the first false dawn.

Be aware that there are some private trees on Ancestry which appear to have your William Arthur Baker's death on 7 April 1900. Perhaps the soldier in the 1901 census is not your man?

Ms Jebber

Thank you for web link to GG. It should or could be the answer but won’t link and load. Can you please check web address you gave for ‘find an ancestor’ please as nothing happens through the one that you gave me!

There is a Worplesden burial for a William Arthur Baker on April 11, 1900. Age 19, died at Union Workhouse, Guildford. The age isn't quite right (your man would only have been 17).

The age isn't quite right for the Grenadier Guardsman either, at 19 (your man would only have been 18 at the time of the 1901 census).
