I would think, as I have written earlier that it is the Noble/Ross connection.
You have uncle and cousin in censuses.
You have the will which might help.

As you already had some of this information, did you come to any similar conclusions?

The nephew William Ross also gives some clues when you trace him back.

There are possible Ross connections around and you could try Scotland’s People to see if there are records there.

Probate record
18th January 1872
Briefly …
The will of William  Ross, late of 1 Alpha Road, Deptford , Gentleman , died 21st December 1871 was proved by:
John McKinlay, 22, Albert Square, Clapham Road
William Ross, 1 Chatham Road, Grosvenor Street, Camberwell, Printer, the Nephew
And William Tell Nelthropp , 1 Alpha Road

Effects under £5000.

Heywood,

I think you're right about the 1861 census.
Where can I find the full probate record ? I don't have a subscription to  Ancestryor FindMyPast.
I live in the Netherlands so I can't visit any record office.

I tried to do it (and did) via this but it was a bit of a fiddle. So I do hope you are more successful (quicker).  ;)

https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

You have the dates which you can enter on advanced search.
This is the page which I hope will work for you.
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar?surname=Ross&yearOfDeath=1872&page=7#calendar

It would be pg 203 for 1872 which doesn’t show on the right page  ::) but pages 202 and 204 do show so it is between them.  :)
