"Also Know as" on Wedding Cert -Bigamist?
« on: Wednesday 22 September 21 11:51 BST (UK) »
Have I found a Bigamist in Harry Dewey? b1881- died 1961?

on the Wedding Certificate of my Relative Mary Ann Oakley (Spinster) to Albert E Jacobs in 6/9/1929, under her name its written "otherwise known as" Mary Ann Dewey.

Mary Ann married Harry Dewey on 24th Oct 1915 - Looking at Harry Dewey's Army records are different to say the least - he was in 4 Army units inc Cycle Corps, Kings own Scottish Borders & Royal Engineers- he says next of kin is his wife Harriet Dewey(married Harry 4/9/1898- died 1957)- he also asked monies to be left to his "Friend" Mary Oakley the date says they have been married a year by then and he had gone awol on the day of the marriage! He was lance corporal but lost this as he went awol on a regular basis. I can not find his death in WW1 but a Harry Dewey dies in Manchester in 1961 and Married again?..

Could Mary Ann have the marriage nulled if she had found out (both women had daughters by him) about him and thats why the marriage cert is marked so?

one other point Mary Ann daughter Dorothy Mary Olive is a witness at her 2nd Marriage (but only 13yo!) and  her surname is also Oakley..

If 1881 is definitely the correct birth year then this looks to be his birth registration

DEWEY, HARRY       SAVAGE
GRO Reference: 1881  M Quarter in PETERBOROUGH  Volume 03B  Page 260

There is a Harry Dewey in the 1939 living in  Peterborough with wife and son. His date of birth would fit the above birth registration.  Marriage looks to be this one.

Marriages Sep 1906
ALLEN    Ada Louisa        Peterbro    3b   563
DEWEY    Harry        Peterbro'    3b   563

The 1939 shows Louisa for the wife.

Is this your Harry or a different one?

The 1961 death mentioned:-

Deaths Jun 1961
DEWEY    Harry    82    Manchester    10e   283

This gives a birth year of 1879 but I can't see a corresponding birth for that year.  As we know age at death is not always accurate.

I can't see any record of a will for the above.

There is a burial for this Harry in Southern Cemetery Manchester, grave no. 3475.  Shares it with six other people none of whom have his surname.

Did you get the Mary Oakley marriage certificate?  If so who was Harry's father?

The marriage to Mary Ann Oakley shows Harry’s father as Charles Dewey, waiter.

The only one I can see is Harry Dewey in 1891 2099/98 - Madeley, Shropshire
It looks as though he was born Harry Taylor

In 1901 2526/64/9
Harry and Harriet Dewey and child are living beside Charles and Ann Dewey and family.

Marriage to Harriet Evans in 1898, Madeley.

In 1911 they are living in Manchester

Ah I think I'm beginning to see the picture now.

The 1881 census has Charles Dewey, single, living at 1 House 1, 11, Stafford Rd Court, Walsall Foreign, Walsall, Staffordshire along with:-

Ann Taylor - married (but I think not)
Children all listed as Taylor, Mary E, Alfred C, Elizabeth, Harry and Louise.

Registration district Walsall
Sub district Bloxwich
Piece number 2821
Folio 157
Page 49

Alfred's birth

TAYLOR, ALFRED  CHARLES     -
GRO Reference: 1873  J Quarter in WALSALL  Volume 06B  Page 673

There does not appear to be one for Harry.  The only one that does appear is for SQ 1878 mmn Plant.
