Thank you for your replies.  Our James parents were Andrew b 1769 and Mary Parkin b 1771, both in Sheffield.  It doesn't help matters that they used the same names over and again and the family were all in the cutlery trade.   
I will investigate the above James and John - they are bound to fit in somewhere,

Hi All
Susan is still evading me.   I think she was from Ireland. She and James had 2children born there in Limerick.  Henry 1820 and William 1823.  I have no baptism records for them. I think also its quite possible that James and Susan  married in Ireland.   I think they left Ireland after William’s birth in 1823 and lived in Sheffield.
I know I have asked before but does anyone have access to Irish parish records and could help?
