I thought that might be the case, it looks like Mary was the only daughter.

Strangely this looks like Mary in 1911, no sign of William though?

It looks like William on the 1911 census may be Mary's brother on the 1881 census. No marriage & Doris was probably not Mary's child.

However fathers name was Andrew?

William Morton Lane Morton is on the HMS Victorious at Torquay in 1911

Thanks so much for your help!  I have contacted the owner of the tree who put up William Morton Lane Morton's birth certificate. His mother was definitely Mary born in Catcliffe.  He also has the birth certificate for Doris and it looks like Mary has put her brother William Andrew, who was a musician down as the father, probably to make her legitimate.  The certificate says mother is Mary Morton formerly Smith. No marriage for them at all and on his Navy record around the same time he puts his next of kin as sister Mary (not Mary his wife if you believe the birth cert for Doris) William Andrew had previously moved to Scotland but walked out on his family in the 1890s.

The 1911 census has them down as man and wife with Doris the daughter.  I think once the birth was registered they just told Doris he was her father.

The 3 of them moved to St Helens where he was a clarinet player in an orchestra, and they all died there between 1930 and 1961.

A very complicated family I've been told!!
