Ann HAWLEY (née GETTLIFFE)
« on: Friday 24 September 21 17:24 BST (UK) »
John HAWLEY and Ann GETTLIFFE married on 01 Aug 1850 at All Saints, Derby. The couple settled in Ann's home village of Ashbourne, where they can be found in 1851, 1861 and 1871. They had five children together: Mary (b 1851), George (b 1852), John (b c1855), Henrietta (b1858) and William (b 1861).

There are two major problems;

1. Until recently I believed that John died first in 1864 [Q4 1864 Derby 7b 266] and that Ann carried on without him until 1900 [Q1 1900 Ashbourne 7b 504]. I now realise that this is totally wrong, since John can be found living as a widower with their children in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses. He finally died in 1892 [Q2 1892 Derby 7b 399]. The trouble is that I can't find an appropriate death for Ann, who must have died sometime between 1861 and 1871. So the first priority is to find a death for Ann HAWLEY. If it helps - and I have severe doubts - several trees on Ancestry have her dying in 1864, but without any evidence and we all know how Ancestry trees copy records from one tree to another without checking.

2. Whilst I can find entries on the GRO for four of the children, I can't find one for John. The 1861, 1871 and 1891 are all consistent in pointing to him having been born in 1855. So I am fairly sure he was born in 1855, but why no record?

As always any help will be greatly appreciated.

The newspaper notice explains a lot. Evidently John moved to Derby with the four eldest and Ann stayed in Ashbourne with the youngest.

I have found an image for the baptism of John, but can't read the DOB info - any translators? Still not sure about the BMD entry, though a translation may help.

Many thanks for all the help and clarification.
