Northam / Marke - Possibly Taunton Area
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me trace a great grandmother, possibly from the Taunton area.

I believe her husband was called Frederick Northam b. circa 1887 (Devon), d. 1962 (Somerset), and she herself had the surname Marke - but I don't know what her first name was. Together they had a daughter called Marina.

I'd be interested in exploring that line further too as I know very little about the maternal side of my family.

Any help would be appreciated,
Andy

Marriage - June quarter 1928 - Wellington, Somerset Registration District - Frederick Northam and Mary E Marke.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you. Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question, but how did you manage to get her first name from Free BMD? I could find the marriage registration (hence how I knew her surname) - but I couldn't find anything with her first name on.

I don't know how true it is, but I was told by a cousin that her line dries up in terms of records fairly quickly as her family were originally Roma gypsies and so no records were kept.

1901 census - Wellington - RG13/2271 folio 38, page 10

William - 44, Emily - 42, Walter - 17, Ethel - 13, Mary - 9 and Samuel - 8.

FreeBMD shows the birth registration as Mary Eva Marke - December quarter 1890 - Wellington, Somerset RD.

I'm such an idiot. I've just been clicking the glasses and info. buttons, looking at the documents and then trying to figure it out from there! This will definitely save me a lot of time. :)
