1861/1871 Census Records - Thomas Wilson Canning
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 11:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm struggling to find the 1861 and 1871 for someone in my family tree. I found some records from 1880 until 1926 but I'm having problems before and after that time. He lists his birth place as Scotland in some census records but on one it was "Whithorn, Wigtown". I can't find him listed in 1861 and 1871 still though.  :(

Details I know:

Full name: Thomas Wilson Canning
Birth year: 1860
Occupation: Missionary/Evangelist
Father's name: James Canning
Father's occupation: Labourer

Any advice appreciated. It would be nice to find out more about his earlier life.  :)

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. He got married in 1880 and on his marriage certificate he is listed as being 21 by May 29th 1880 so a birth in 1859 would stack up. I found a baptism certificate for 21st April 1859 that also spells canning as conning, which is probably an error. On the baptism record his mother is listed as being called Lilias Macintyre.

Could you tell me which website "S.P. hmcc" is please? I wouldn't mind having a look at the birth record. I couldn't find it on www.freebmd.org.uk.

Thanks for the census record, that's very useful!

I861, College Street, Glasgow:

James Conning, 38, police constable, b. Whithorn
Lilias Conning, 26, b. Stirlingshire, Kilmadock*
James, 3, b. Whithorn
Thomas, 2, b. Whithorn
Rachel, 0, b. Glasgow

*I have taken this from FindMyPast, which says Argyllshire, Kilmedoch, but it should obviously be Stirlingshire, Kilmadock, as that is the parish where Doune is, therefore tying in with the 1871 census.

Thanks very much for the 2nd census record, GR2. Interesting to see James Canning doing various jobs. Looks like the son James must have died young. :(

Is there a census record for the 1930s showing Thomas Wilson Canning back in Lanarkshire? I think he either died in Wantage, Berkshire in 1928 or else his wife (Sarah Canning) died around 1926 and he went back to Scotland for his latter years.

Thanks for the info. hmcc! ;)

Family Search gives death as 1928, Wantage, Berks for Thomas W Canning.
James Conning married Lillias McIntyne (McIntyre) 22/08/1852 Stirling on ScotlandsPeople.
S.P. gives two births also for a James Conning 1815 and 1822 both Whithorn.

Thanks for the extra info, hmcc. That’s also the death entry I think seems most likely for him. They were living in Wandsworth, London in 1926 but perhaps moved on to Wantage, Berkshire.

Thomas raised my great grandfather with his wife (Sarah Canning) and Sarah was actually my great grandfather’s half-sister - her maiden name being Lister. After the death of my great great grandfather my great grandfather was taken in. That’s why I wanted to research Thomas, although probably won’t research his family.
