Thank you all. You have been very helpful. As a newbie to researching family history I am keen to learn from the more experienced people out there. So please can ask how you went about locating your info.? Did you have particular sites to go to as I do not think I am fully aware of where I can look things up yet. Many thanks

Hi,

Ancestry and Find My Past are paid subscription sites, they are the largest that most sub to one or other, or both, if interested and able to afford.
There are some links here on Rootschat to have a discounted sub for Ancestry that I have used in past, if interested.
There is a 14 day free trial for Ancestry, but you need to cancel before 14th day, or they will charge you for full subscription.

Some free sites include:

www.familysearch.org
Registration needed, free to search.

www.freeukgenealogy.org.uk
This includes FreeBMD, FreeCEN, and FreeREG

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
Registration needed, but free to search. Gives mother's maiden name if married and ages at death. You can also order certs from here.  Civil registration started  September 1837, before this it is parish records.

https://www.genuki.org.uk/
Another I find good for areas in research.

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php
Some info on various sites.

I am sure there will be others to add more, many here are also willing to help if needed.

Best wishes in your FH search

Cas
