Prison/ Court cases
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 22:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Just doing a routine search into a Gt Aunt Fanny Houldsworth who was born in Scarcliffe in 1855. She married a Charles Hughes from Bolsover a Stone Mason in 1876. they then moved to Sheffield. Imagine my shock when I found both jailed for running a brothel ::
Would I be able to find the court case for this etc. It was 22 May 1894.

Possibly, but it was only the Police Court, not the sessions or assizes. So Sheffield Archives should have anything that survives. You can contact them to ask - see this page ...

Hi,

Evening telegraph & Star 23 May 1894

SHEFFIELD CITY POLICE

Charles Hughes, Mason, Arundel Street, was sentenced to three months imprisonment for having kept a disorderly house.  Mr. W. E. Clegg prosecuted and the offence was proved by Detectives Drew and Mossindrew, who watched the house for several days.

Ancestry have his Wakefield Prison Record, including brief description of him
