1939 Register
« on: Thursday 30 September 21 14:42 BST (UK) »
Hello
my Auntie Ethel was born in 1921 so has recently been uncovered, I knew where she was and she was married in February 1945  but her whole entry has been crossed out in pink ink and it says  See page 19  maiden name crossed out and married name added  with NMA above  M  and the date 11/5/45.  Anyone know why she was crossed out?  Thank you

The Register was used up until the early nineties, so her maiden name would have been crossed out and her married name added later.  Why the whole entry was crossed out later, it's hard to say without knowing what was on page 19. Someone else may have a suggestion, but I wonder did she enlist in one if the services? If she enlisted her Identity Card and Rations would have been supplied by the relevant service and not on the Register.

Thank you, I wondered if the pink ink was anything significant?

Hi,
I just looked up some relatives and that page includes mostly black ink, but additions in green ink, red, a pale blue, and regular blue ink.  The pale blue looks unusual - and your pink ink would be too.

My guess would be that the inks may have faded or changed over time?  They added details such as married names at various dates, so different pens would be around.
Maybe they wanted those later additions to stand out, with colours used.

That makes sense, maybe they just wanted to highlight that it had been altered  Thank you

The NMA is possibly the area code for the adjustment
NMA   Lancashire   Preston   CB

My female family member who appears on the 1939 and subsequently enlisted did not have any alteration to their entry on the register
