I'm not sure that it makes much difference but the Charles born 1845 was actually Charles EDWARD Somerville. The civil service evidence of age was signed and written by both parents in 1863, residing at Leamington.

It was signed by just Frances.

the will for the 1909 Charles is on FindMyPast

he is a Tobacconist. He spells his name Summerville and he has no second name.
he leaves all his personal estate to his partner - Robert Anderson
Except for £50 to Myrtle Roset, daughter of Albert & Elizabeth Roset of Narromine
To Mrs Annie Woolcott of Western(?) Port, State of Victoria 90 acres. And if she is dead, to be sold and equal shares given to her children.

Added… I presume you have the death certificate for this man,

What does it say? All fields please

I wondered if Annie Woolcot could be Annie Maria born 1870

But you and others have her married to Thomas GALE
Why is that?   The marriage registry has her surname as GUILFORD
and the marriage of one of her children also has her maiden name as GUILFORD

Did she marry previously?  she would have been 20. So not much time for that.
or did Hannah leave Charles (or v.v.)  and take up with Mr Guilford?

I see Hannah's mother is said to be Elizabeth WOOLCOCK which is very similar to WOOLCOTT.   But if Annie Woolcott is somehow connected that way then it seems even more weird that he apparently leaves nothing to his own son and daughter.

Hoping you come back on line soon to explain all this.

Yes in the 1871 census in Paddington and yes I did mean 1871

Where does Australia come into it? Australia came into when he immigrated to Australia, unsure how he immigrated to Australia. I know that my great grandfather Charles Edward Somerville was born in Goulborn, NSW, Australia. We think he married a Hannah Parsons in Goulborn.

Any information about Fanny Somerville would be helpful. Along with Charles and Fanny's parents if possible. I believe it might be Henry Somerville and Frances Rogers.

There is also a possible family member James Somerville in Goulborn.

Where my 3rd Great Grandfather was born, christened cannot find reliable records.

Answering Questions

My apologies to not being online but I have been recovering from operations and a death in the family.

1)   When is the first definite sighting of him in Australia? Well, my great great grandfather Charles Edward was born in 18 Jul 1869 Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia
2)   Where does Australia come into it? Charles Edwin or Edward Somerville immigrated to Australia unsure when that happened.
3)   I believe that he was born in the Isle of Mann but not 100% certain of that either
4)   Still looking for an actual birth record for him
5)   Arrival in Australia could have been into the ports of either Sydney or Melbourne.
6)   I know that there was no convict paperwork or assisted immigrant records if there is I can’t find anything. That leaves that he could’ve paid to travel himself to Australia
7)   Every thing beyond Charles Edward Somerville (Great, great grandfather) has been a lot of guesswork through old diaries and family letters. Which has been hard to verify and really frustrating.
8)   Where Thomas Gale and Guilford come into it is frustrating there was a lot of affairs and legitimate children on the Somerville line. Which was only verified through DNA Testing.
9)   I believe from research that there may have been some alias’s as well.
10)   The only family history I am certain of is my great, great grandfather Charles Edward Somerville who married Catherine Braybrook to present time. Beyond that I am finding any information that clarifies any things from the past.
If I could give out my email I would to make it easier for people to connect

Regards Loretta

On my great, great grandfathers death certificate which states he passed away on the 20th May 1943. It lists his father as Charles Edwin Somerville (School Teacher) and Hannah Parsons. I have attached that certificate.

Glad to see you back, I am sorry to hear life has not been all straight forward for you of late.

If you email us individually you don't get the benefit of combined expertise.
Frequently in these threads someone makes a random comment/query and someone else is reminded of something and off it goes.

It seems clear from the work we did earlier that it is easy to trace the Isle of Man Charles Edwin Somerville. His parents, and also his presence in England in 1871 and 1881.
So the problem is to get him to Australia for just a couple of years.

I cannot see the 1869 birth on the NSW registry.

Charles' birth

SOMMERVILLE  CHARLES E 9393/1868 CHARLES E HANNAH GOULBURN

But Also I DO see this birth

SOMERVILLE  ANNIE MARIA 9877/1870 CHARLES E HANNAH GOULBURN

What does that certificate say?

That is narrowing the time available for Charles to get back to England and be the one in the 1871 census by a fair bit.

It would be worth posting a link to this thread on the Australian board. There are some expert NSW researchers lurking there. Don't repost the whole thing. Just add an explanatory note and a link. Otherwise there will be a whole lot of doubled up research done.

modified 9.31 GMT +13  same day-  to add Charles' birth registration details

Do you have this certificate?  What does it say?
