Added. I think it would be worth getting the 1868 marriage certificate. I am fairly sure, but others with NSW expertise might correct me, that it should have his place of birth.
Yes, the NSW bdm would be useful... BUT .... while it should have first hand nfo about the bride and the groom ... age, where born, occupation, parents, including nee names for their mums, etc, that depth of detail may have been kept back by the clergy when submitting the marriage info to the then civil BDM processes. It will be on the church registers. NSW bdm website acknowledges that they did not complete all the tasks of fully reconciling their meagre summary holdings with all the various church registers.
There is a thread in NSW resources giving info on seeking out those elusive blanks. But step 1 starts with official transcripton of NSW bdm.... don't spend up on the real deal expensive certificates. Let me know if you need further details on this.
