Martha Gibbons 1881 census
« on: Saturday 02 October 21 18:01 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for Martha Gibbons born 8 July 1863 in Tamil Nadu India.
She married Charles King in Abingdon 1885 but I can't find her in 1881.
Her Brother James and Sister Elizabeth were both in Newbury workhouse in 1881 but Martha was older so perhaps she was working.
Thanks

There's a Martha A H Gibbons b c1863 working as a servant in Oxford. her pob is listed as Abingdon

Ref: RG11;  1500; 4; 2;

However her birth is registered in Abingdon  (spelled Gibbens) and looks like she marries in 1886

Thank you. She was called Martha with no middle name. Jane isn't related unless it was a misprint, it's strange that the year is the same.

I'm fairly sure that Mabel has found your Martha as "Jane". :)

Not a mistake-her forename is clearly written as Jane on the 1881 image.

There are no births/deaths/marriages for a Jane GIBB*N* in India...let alone in Newbury. ;)

Thanks everyone, I've added this to my tree.
I was just wondering if her Mother was from England as on the 1911 census it stated British Subject by parentage. England was crossed out but perhaps Martha had written this. I know that her father was born Newbury but can't find her Mother, other than Elizabeth Ratcliffe. Any ideas?

Is she on the 1871?

Her Brother James and Sister Elizabeth were both in Newbury workhouse in 1881

James was b Berkshire around 1874 but Elizabeth was b India 1868.  You could check for James birth registration on freebmd then use GRO online to find Elizabeth's maiden name

What was her fathers name on her 1885 marriage cert?

Have you looked on freebmd for a Gibbons/Ratcliffe(e) marriage?
