Marriage License Details 1785
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can somebody tell me where I look up the Marriage License details for a marriage that happened in 1785 in Fringford between William Enser and Mary Howse.

Many thanks

Regards

I would hazard a guess that the Bond/Allegation, if they have survived, would be at Oxfordshire Record Office.  Ancestry show the marriage to have taken place at Bicester.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi

Thanks for the info.

According to one record I believe the marriage was carried out in Fringford and also shown in Bicester, both on the same day. From past License records I seen the License bit seems to be a private affair and then announced publicly in church. I don't really know much about it just something else to try and understand.

I'll see what I can find out from the Oxfordshire Records Office, I just hope it doesn't mean a trip to find out

I can't see anything online for the Marriage Bond/Allegation, and it could be that they haven't survived.  From the Ancestry image, the marriage definitely took place at Bicester - 29 December - William was from the parish of Fringford, whilst Mary was "of this parish".  Both signed the register, and one of the witnesses was Ann Howse, who also signed, the other witness was William Leppes/Lepper.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi BumbleB

You are exactly right - The Parish is Bicester. I mistook William being of the Fringford Parish to mean that it was actually at Fringford - the place he was currently living. I can now see that when it was taking about Mary Howse 'this Parish' it was referring to Bicester not Fringford.

Well spotted.

Many thanks

I can't see anything online for the Marriage Bond/Allegation, and it could be that they haven't survived.

This was a diocesan licence, from the bishop (Consistory Court), not from the Archdeaconry Court – which is why it isn’t found in FindMyPast’s database.

See here, and scroll down to E 204 ...

The Oxfordshire History Centre is the place to try. You won’t need to visit. Just give them the details of the entry from the above link, and if they have access they will quote for sending a copy of the document.

Hi Bookbox

I have now received a copy of the license. It confirms that William Enser was living at Fringford and Mary Howse was living in Bicester at the time of their marriage. The witness William Lepper was from Stratton Audley. Other than the date unfortunately no other information is shown.

I have researched for the baptism record in Fringford and found nothing, there is a baptism record (only a transcript) for William Enser in Bicester in 1747 so that may be him, it records his Father as William Enser. So bit more research needed

As for Mary Howse, there is also a record (only a transcript) for Bicester for her for 1756 so that may be her. Mary's father is shown as William Howse, so again a bit more research required.

Thanks so much for your help
