Charles Thomas Brown
« on: Thursday 07 October 21 12:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, please can anyone help me to find the death of Charles Thomas Brown?  He was born 13 December 1839 in Norfolk.   The 1881 census shows that he was living at North Denes Battery with wife Eliza and daughter Alice, his occupation was Acting Bombardier, Royal Artillery.

Eliza died in Great Yarmouth in 1886 and their two children Alice and Rose went to a Leeds Orphanage in 1890.  I therefore assumed that Charles died in 1890 but am unable to find a record of his death.  It seems more likely that he was unable to care for the children for some reason by 1890.  The orphanage records on admission in Oct 1890 show that Rose and Alice's next of kin was their father Ch Brown, 35 Beaconsfield Road, Yarmouth.

Alice left the orphanage in 1897 and Rose in 1894.  On the 1891 Census they are in the orphanage.  The 1901 census shows that they were in service at homes in Morecambe.  In 1911 Rose is married and living in Carmarthenshire, and Alice is single and living in Yorkshire.

Charles' military history sheet shows that he served from April 1859 to April 1886 when he was discharged.

The UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges, 1715-1925 is attached.

I have attempted to discover when his Royal Hospital Chelsea pension stopped being paid with no success at present (I have sent an enquiry to the National Archives today).

I'd be grateful for any thoughts on how to proceed, with many thanks.

Charles was still at 35 Beaconsfield Road, Yarmouth in the 1891 census. A boarder with Maria Smith and her family.

That's brilliant, thanks so much - I'd tried searching on his name and the address with no success!

Yes I have doubted the middle name - the only place it appears is on what is believed to be his baptism in 1839 (parents Valentine and Susan), so I wonder if that is not his baptism.  The 1891 census has his date of birth much earlier - 1831, though probably estimated.  Thank you for your help.

Thanks to everyone's help, I've found that Charles was born 1831 and died in 1898, sadly in the workhouse and is buried in Great Yarmouth.

In the army file there's a previous next of kin that has been crossed out...can't make it out

Could it be M. Barnes  :-\.    Mill Hill Norfolk, there is a Mill Hill in Norwich

Do you have the marriage certificate as that should confirm who his father was.
