Re: 1939 Register Surname

And remember that where the parent's surnames were different, the registration will appear twice in the index, under each surname.  But there will only be one entry.

So when the transcribers record the entries for the online genealogy websites are they aware of this?

I've only ever come across two surnames with marriages and previous marriages.

I had an ancestor whose parents weren't married presumably because the mother had previously been married but, according to the 1891 census, divorced, though I doubt legally. I have only found an entry for the birth under the mother's previous married surname and not the father's.

Did the register have a cross reference or were both surnames together?

Thanks.

The entry will appear under both surnames on the index so that when they are transcribed on to freebmd they will both show up with the same reference

Hi

Thank you for link. It was my original query which has lead me to this line of thinking 😁

I am hoping somebody has come across some information on the web about being a single parent at that time and any legal documentation or even documents relating to having children and babies. I still have my original NHS card and baby clinic cards so I'm thinking down those lines.

Thanks.

Did you find a date for the name change?
If you did, what about electoral registers to see who was living with her around that time - you would need the address though to check them locally if it is not online.

I am a bit confused with the previous thread so I might have misunderstood  the situation.  :-\

Hi

Yes there is a date for the name change.

Electoral registers is definitely a line of investigation to go down next though they aren't online. I really need a trip back home to visit the library though don't believe they lived at the same house.

Thanks.
