And remember that where the parent's surnames were different, the registration will appear twice in the index, under each surname. But there will only be one entry.
So when the transcribers record the entries for the online genealogy websites are they aware of this?
I've only ever come across two surnames with marriages and previous marriages.
I had an ancestor whose parents weren't married presumably because the mother had previously been married but, according to the 1891 census, divorced, though I doubt legally. I have only found an entry for the birth under the mother's previous married surname and not the father's.
Did the register have a cross reference or were both surnames together?
