Ancestors of Martin and Mary Bergin.
« on: Saturday 16 October 21 15:43 BST (UK) »
Martin and Mary Bergin moved from Ireland to Elton, Lancashire UK about 1860/61.

Based on the 1861 England and Wales Census, Martin and Mary Bergin together with their 10 children were located in Elton Lancashire.

In the Census Martin’s age is given as 42 (b.1819 birthplace Ireland) and Mary’s age is given as 40 (b.1821 birthplace Ireland).

Their children, Richard, Thomas, Martin, Anne, Bridget, William, Patrick, John, Joseph and Mary were all born in Ireland between 1843 and 1859.

Martin and a number of his children were employed as factory/mill workers in Elton.

I have no other information on Martin and his family prior to the 1861 Census and my efforts to find and information as to his ancestry in Ireland have yielded no verifiable results.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello, there is some similarity between the childrens' names you mention and those for children baptised for parents Martin Bergin/Bergan and Mary Quigly who got married in Mountmellick RC parish, Co. Laois in 1844, does that trigger anything? - I can provide individual's details if you like:

Edited to add: So as an example, in the 11th entry down of the following link, Bridget Bergin was baptised on 11 May 1851 for parents Martin Bergin and Mary Quigley:

Hi Gaffy. That was quick. Thanks for the speedy reply.
Absolutely spot on.  ;D I've not checked all 10 children yet but the ones that I have are on the money.
I now have the wife’s maiden name and an area to work on.
Great stuff. Thank you so much.

Hi Gaffy,
Just a follow up to say that I've located the baptism records for all children except for Ann Bergin (born 1845 according to the census) and Richard (born 1843 according to the census).
I may have missed them as the record pages are not all that easy to read so if you have a link for the pages that would be great.
You mentioned in your post that Martin Bergin and Mary Quigly were married in 1844, sorry but I can't find that entry either.
If the census is correct then Richard was born out of wedlock  :o
Sorry for the imposition but Irish records are still very new to me.
Thanks for your help.

The only thing I can offer you is the information from 'RootsIreland' transcripts for Mountmellick parish, the marriage I mentioned has a date of 1 January 1844, there is a baptism for Anne for those parents dated 1 March 1846 - there is literally nothing else recorded and I couldn't find these in the registers available on the NLI website.  No record for a son Richard, though there was a son transcribed as Michael, (baptismal) date 1 December 1844.

Hi Gaffy.
Thanks for the further information. Invaluable help again. It all helps to fill in the picture.
I will keep digging although the Irish records may be a bit of a steep learning curve for me.
Your help is much appreciated.

Where do you have Richard?

In 1861, Elton, the oldest child is Michael, 18 yrs.
I can’t see Richard anywhere else. He would be old enough to be living away.

This looks to be a transcript - Michael 12th December 1844.

There is a link to an original copy, difficult to read, via Ancestry which should be on the parish site somewhere.

There are also links to the other children.

There is a link for Ann Berrin (transcribed on Anc.) with those parents - 3 March 1846
Eventually found this - pg 63 foot of right hand page

Having read your first list of names, I wonder if the child is Michael rather than Richard? The census writing does look quite like Richard but I would say it is Michael.

Hi heywood,
Thanks for your input.
The reference to 'Richard b.1843' is from a transcription sent to me from a relative. I suspect it's in error as Richard doesn't appear on any other copy of the 1861 Census that I can find, the birth date is prior to the Martin/Mary marriage date and I can find no baptism record for Richard either.
I agree with you in regard to the entry for Ann. Not easy to read but date and parents tie in.
All help is very much appreciated.
