« on: Thursday 01 September 05 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out which ship and the year my gg grandparents landed in Australia.

Their names....Henry Joseph Charles MITCHELL and Ellen Marina MITCHELL.

Henry was born in Kent and Ellen was born in Camden Town.

They lived in Bendigo and their first child was born at "7th White Hill,Bendigo in 1856".

Kind Regards

Steve

The site I usually use for lookups has been down for most of today:

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/immigration/introduction.htm

This covers immigration to NSW and Victoria to 1852.

I would try this first.

I found this in the unassisted immigration to Victoria.

MITCHELL   ---- MRS   38   JAN   1853   WELLINGTON   B   025   001
MITCHELL   CHARLES   7   JAN   1853   WELLINGTON   B   025   002
MITCHELL   HENRY   40   JAN   1853   WELLINGTON   B   025   001

I'll search the assisted list next.

Hi Steve,
There are online indexes to Victorian immigration records on the following page:

http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/pathways/pathway4/pathway4.jsp#_Immigration_and_Multicultural_Affai

In case that link doesn't get you there, go to the main page, then click on Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.  The indexes are:
Database Indexes

Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852-1923

Assisted British Immigration 1839-1871

Good luck!

I haven't come across anything in the assisted immigrants list for Victoria.

In the lists there are heaps of Mitchells who either haven't given a first name or are just travelling under the names Mr & Mrs.  Not very helpful.

Often death certificates list the time spent in the colony.  That might be useful in narrowing it down a bit.
