Whitby PR Assistance
« on: Tuesday 26 October 21 19:02 BST (UK) »
Evening all,

Having has a super weekend away in Whitby with my family I decided to shake the family tree and see what fell out.

I have the St. Mary's Whitby Parish Registers that I bought as pdfs on a CD ROM.
I have thge following Entry:
Quote
1780 Dec 17 Watson, John son William & Jane (sailor) born Aug 6th, Whitby

If anyone is going to the Yorkshire Archives OR has access to something other than the CD I have could they look up the entry and see if there is anything further regarding the Father and Mother.

Is there anything further like their origins ? i.e. something like of xx parish etc.

It's a long shot but may confirm something else that I have found.

OK thanks

I know that his father is William and mother Jane.

I have found a William Watson marrying a Jane Stephenson in Loftus on Ancestry.

Trying to locate more info to match up a bit more but this marriage in 1778 is the closest match in a large area.

Now trying to locate Loftus PRs

The North Yorkshire County Council archive catalogue is online https://archivesunlocked.northyorks.gov.uk/CalmView/default.aspx and they say most of their parish registers are on Find My Past.

Thanks.

I have Ancestry but not FindMyPast

I'll see if I can get some time at the local archives

So now established that the
William Watson and Jane Stephenson of Loftus are most likely NOT my William Watson and Jane.

No other Watson child born of parents William and Jane in Whitby that I have on the St. Mary's registers. No William marrying a Jane in Whitby either.

Who were John's Parents?
Where were they from ?

Known Timeline:
BAP 1780 Dec 17 Watson, John son William & Jane (sailor) born Aug 6th, Whitby
MAR 1802 Jan 4 John Watson, bachelor, mariner & Rebecca Brown, spinster, both of this parish, licence
Wit Ann Dobson, Henry Burdon
Cur Isaac Fearon

By 1807 Rebecca was in Kings Lynn and getting remarried as a Widow.
