Ann Orr Born in England?
« on: Friday 29 October 21 16:45 BST (UK) »
I'm not terribly sure where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I have a relative, Ann Orr who on censuses claims to be born in England around 1810. She died in 1900 and states her parents to be William Orr and Ann Carfrae.

She had two siblings born in Kirknewton in 1800 and 1803, (Elizabeth and John), so I assume her parents had moved down to England before then, before moving back up to Kirknewton as she married there in 1835, to James Rennie.

Her father was a Soldier, so maybe that's why they moved down south. Anyway, I can't seem to find her birth anywhere so I was hoping someone could help me with that as I'd like to know in what area of England she was born.

WILLIAM ORR & ANNE CARFRAE, I do not see a marriage for them on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

However  the  children you mention were noted at
Kirknewton and East Calder in Midlothian.

No luck with a birth for Ann in England I'm afraid.

Did the whole family move back to Scotland to your knowledge or just Ann?

I note that there are possible births for Anne CARFRAE (With variations) the name seems to
originate from Carfrae in Berwickshire. Orr I'm afraid is quite a common name in Scotland.

Do you know much about William military service?

I’m not too sure, just Ann to my knowledge. I’ve looked up the two siblings on SP but nothing of note came up, so it’s hard to tell.

According to someone else on ancestry her father, William Orr was born in Edinburgh 1780 and mother, Ann Carfrae in Borthwick 1782, whether that’s just a guess through SP records, or maybe they know something I don’t.

I’ve not managed to find anything about William’s military service, there was a hint on ancestry on a William Orr located in India, but I’m pretty sure it’s a different person, as you say, it’s common surname.

I’ve looked for death records for her parents on SP but nothing comes up either.

Many thanks for your help Colin.

This on freereg, they are in Edinburgh in 1841, they have two children James 15 & Ann 13.

It look very likely that Ann & her sister Elizabeth married brothers James & Peter.

JAMES RANNIE   Married    MARY GORDON   20/12/1797   Edinburgh

JAMES RENNIE/RAINNIE/RAINNY & MARY GORDON
– children Kirknewton and East Calder

PETER 20/09/1801, DAVID 3/05/1807, HENRY ALLAN 14/05/1809
ROBERT 21/07/1811, JAMES 29/08/1813, ALEXANDER LOCKH 18/05/1817

It would be worthwhile looking at the Kirk Session records on SP.

JAMES RENNIE   Died    Age 80   Mmn - GORDON   1893   Newington
ANNIE RENNIE   Died    Age 90   Mmn - CARBRAE   1900   Leith South

Peter is on 1881 census noted as a widower.
