Coming from the area, I don't think there is a municipal cemetery for just St Martins.  The nearest large cemetery would be Oswestry or, maybe, Chirk, which is still in use.

As far as I can recall, St Martins burial ground was still in use in the 1930s. I'll see if I can get information from one of my cousins who still lives in the area. Add - however, he wouldn't know the plot number.

Did she live in the Weston Rhyn part of the parish?

Have I misunderstood? I was taking it that St Martins was a Church. (We should never assume should we!)

thanks - archives are sure the burial was at St Martins (it's from their burial records, and I've seen the pdf copy). Next to the date for some burials there appears to be some kind of script, but not all records, and not my grandmothers. The municipal celery is Oswestry (where I originally searched for her, but there is no record of her burial there).

Archives are convinced the record is of the burial of my grandmother at St Martins, and I think the weight of evidence would suggest it was.

The church warden who kindly helped me, didn't seem surprised that they couldn't locate her exact spot. Maybe not all churches do keep good records!?

here's the actual record - it's definitely a burial record and the book it was from was St Martins church records.

BUT - her record is out of date order AND she is the only one without a grave reference (as we already know)  :-\ :-\  Strange!

Added:  AND Thomas Burkitt Price is entered twice with different dates (one of them subsequently crossed out)  :o
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Ha! - I originally read that as the 1st January not 7th.

But if you look further down there's a burial removed, which struck me as very odd... (which you spotted - Thomas Burkitt Price)

Who knows...

Would paupers grave have a grave reference - or was having your grave recorded tied to you or someone paying for your plot?

Yes -- the letters and numbers on the right look like they could be grave numbers and she doesn't have any.

That doesn't look like a complete burial record book to me at all, compared with the one I have seen, which was far more detailed - it's more like a normal burial register (if you know what I mean). There is no information on the size of the plots - how many people are in it and who purchased it. There MUST be other records from the church detailing this information.

However - I do know they are so difficult to locate, especially once a churchyard has been 'closed' for burials.

If a pauper is buried in a churchyard - yes they have a grave reference as there is a body there.
