Church or Register Office wedding ? Help please
« on: Wednesday 03 November 21 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon everyone a very quick question please.

Is it possible to distinguish whether a marriage took place in a church or a register office from the Marriage Index.

Great grandparents married in the Ffestiniog registration district during the Sept quarter of 1879.

Very easily found - Jeremiah Jones and Margaret Roberts both on FreeBMD and FindMyPast.  There's no parish marriage on FindMyPast but the area is very hit and miss as to which parish is there and what dates are on it.

Before I go to the expense of buying the certificate I thought I'd ask here to see if it was posible because if its a church wedding I still live locally enough to go and view the parish registers.

Thank you very much.
Nesta

If you search sept qtr 1879 marriages for Festiniog on freebmd without inputting any names you can see the range of numbers.  The lowest seems to be 513 and the highest 541.  Normally the higher numbers appear to be registrar attended or register office weddings.  Probably not infallible though

They are 539 so probably registrars.   Will order the certificate.
Again, thank you

Have a look at North Wales BMD - http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/index.php

This shows it as a civil marriage, but the help pages explain that this includes marriages in non-conformist chapels where the registrar attended. The only way to find out exactly where it was would be to order a copy of the certificate (you can do this from the link on the NWBMD site) - or you might be lucky and find a newspaper notice or report. The National Library of Wales has a good collection online, which is free.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Fantastic - thank you very much - I had not thought of the newspapers ! even though I've used them for other relatives.

arthuruk - Thank you so much I found them in the Caernafon & Denbigh Herald 19/09/1879 and it gives their addresses! which confirms what I thought.
