John Bigglane,1853-1904
« on: Thursday 04 November 21 22:28 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to find more information about my great grandfather, John Bigglane,1853-1904. He is recorded in the 1891 and 1901 censuses living in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire with a birth location of Wellington, Shropshire. He married Norah Herrity in 1883 in Newcastle-u-L and died in Dec 1904, sadly just a few days after the death of his son John Patrick Bigglane.

I haven’t found any records of him before 1883. There is a John Biglean born in 1853 in Wellington who briefly raised my hopes but he appears to have died in 1855.

John Biglean who died in 1855 was aged 57, so maybe don;t give up on the 1853 birth

This husehold in Wellington from 1851 may be worth looking at. All born Ireland. This is as transcribed on Ancestry, but the Bylands all look like they could be Bigland, similarly JOhn at the bottom of the list, who is I think the 1855 death

Thomas Henry    23
Catherine Henry    19
Mary Henry    12
Richd Byland    55 - married
Margret Byland    53 married

Bridget Byland    12
Phebe Dogerty    58

The inquest into the death of John Biglane, Staffordshire Sentinel, 24 Dec 1904, gave his age as 44.

FindMyPast has a John Bislane (as transcribed), age 8, boarder, on the '61 Census, born Wellington. The entry above is Ann Biglane (as transcribed), age 40, widow, boarder, born Ireland.

brilliant - Hanes Teslu
that would explain why the FIRST Biglane on freebmd isn't until 1858
looks like they came over from Ireland  ...great work ...explains a lot as well - enumerator getting the info from a broad Irish man / woman - probably wrote down as he heard it
