James Burchatt RAGGETT
« on: Saturday 06 November 21 15:33 GMT (UK) »
I can't find a birth certificate for the above individual. His baptism can be easily found on several sites. He was baptised in Godalming on 08 Feb 1852. His father was William RAGGETT, a baker, and his mother was Harriet HILL.

He was obviously born before Feb 1852, but not long before as he was only 9 in the 1861 census.

I would kite to find a birth certificate for him. Any ideas?

Did he have siblings whose births were registered?

Maybe parents were a bit lax, when did they marry?

Nope failed to find him I'm afraid  :(

Registration wasn't compulsory in those days

I realise that registration was not compulsory, but families that registered siblings usually registered all of their children.

I was wondering whether James being the first child was registered under a different name, possibly the son of a different father.

I haven't yet found a marriage for his parents, though to be fair I haven't really searched for one. I will now given the above thought.

Also what about the use of "Burchatt" as a middle name? An old family name? There was a James BURCHETT born in Chertsey in 1852.

Greaves, there was a search for James' birth certificate on here only a few weeks ago. Heywood found him in the 1871 census for you.

Marriage of parents
Marriage was 26 Oct 1841, St Mary Lambeth
William Raggett junr, Baker

Harriet Hill

I rapidly found the marriage of his parents. They married 26 Oct 1841 in Lambeth.

Moreover, I was wrong about him being the first child. He was the fifth born. Interestingly Emma, the child born before him in 1849, was registered. So why wasn't James?

Oops, I must have missed that reply.

I'm afraid that my note keeping isn't the best! I have reached the stage in my research, where I keep coming back to the same unanswered questions, hence the repetition.

Sorry for my sloppiness.

Named after a close friend, benefactor, or employer perhaps. There was a High Street baker named Charles Burchatt in Godalming at that time.
