I have been looking at the 1851 census for William Hamilton that you posted.
He is indeed the nephew here. The head of house is widow Sarah OFFICER.
Well she was Sarah HAMILTON – another sister (probably older born about 1799) to Ann and Elizabeth.
This is her in 1841 census
https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a154a38f4040b9d6e5c31e8/sarah-officer-1841-renfrewshire-greenock-1801-?locale=en

Here is Sarah’s marriage
OFFICER   ROBERT   SARAH HAMILTON FR2217 (FR2217)   26/05/1831   564/3    80 190   Greenock Old or West

I wonder if the Death cert for Sarah (HAMILTON) OFFICER would give any information about her parents –mother’s maiden name is not given in the index.
OFFICER   SARAH   59      1856   564/3 223   Greenock Old or West

What is interesting is that the census records Sarah as being born in Ireland.  The 1841 census has Ann Hamilton as being born in Ireland too. I wonder if the Hamilton family came across from Ireland in the early 1800s with some children, and more children were born in Scotland?

They say "great minds think alike!" and that's what's happening -- what you have found corroborates what I've just been discovering!

Sarah Hamilton and Robert Officer had at least 2 children - Margaret Sharp Officer abt 1831 and Robert Officer about 1841.

Margaret Sharp Officer married James Bryce (can't find marriage) and had daughter Sarah Hamilton Bryce who later married Alexander Meikle 1875 and had amongst their children Margaret Sharp Meikle and James Bryce Meikle!!

Guess who Sarah H. Bryce was with in the 1861 and 1871 Census!? Elizabeth Hamilton of the 1841 and 1851 Census with her husband Thomas Houston and are in Kilbarchan:

I thought the same thing when I saw that Sarah was born in Ireland and that in 1841 Ann is listed as being born in Ireland too but in 1851, supposedly born in Irvine, Ayshire.

Elizabeth Hamilton / Houston's death records states that her mother's maiden name was STEWART:

HAMILTON, ELIZABETH
74
STEWART
1882
568/ 7
Kilbarchan
-------------
HOUSTON, ELIZABETH
74
STEWART
1882
568/ 7
Kilbarchan
-------------

From there I did a quick check to see if there were any baptisms for HAMILTON children with mother STEWART in Irvine, Ayr and here's what came up:

HAMILTON, ELISABETH
DAVID HAMILTON + SARAH STEWART
07/12/1807
595/
20 153
Irvine
------
HAMILTON, STEWART
DAVID HAMILTON + SARAH STEWART
19/07/1810
595/
20 162
Irvine
------
HAMILTON, ARCHIBALD
DAVID HAMILTON + SARAH STEWART
12/03/1812
595/
20 166
Irvine
------

Couldn't find James HAMILTON of 1851 Census who was supposedly brother of Ann and Elizabeth and nothing on Stewart HAMILTON but did find Archibald HAMILTON living in Johnstone, Renfrew during 1871 Census = https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5b91aab5f4040b176c92fadf/archibald-hamilton-1871-renfrewshire-abbey-paisley-1813-?locale=en

My brain is excited but literally "fried" or at least "frying!" LOL

The sad thing is that Irish records of that time period are virtually non-existant because of a fire so I may not be able to go any further back ....

Have you had any success in finding Mary HAMILTON born about 1832ish in the 1851 Census? I would have thought since she didn't marry William Tichborne until 1852 that she might be with her family but .... :(

No I didn't find anything I liked the look of. I think she must be somewhere near to her husband to be.
Where was William Tichborne in 1851?

Here's Archibald HAMILTON born Ayrshire and living in Johnstone in 1871
https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5b91aab5f4040b176c92fadf/archibald-hamilton-1871-renfrewshire-abbey-paisley-1813-?locale=en

Wonder why I can't easily locate him in previous Census years?

Remember the 1851 Census showing Ann and Elizabeth HAMILTON and "nephew" Robert Semple?

Well, the Archibald HAMILTON does seem to be an actual nephew - his parents were John HAMILTON and Mary WHITE / WHYTE and his father was dead by 1851 Census when mom and the kids are in Port Glasgow -- https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a155173f4040b9d6e646264/mary-hamilton-1851-renfrewshire-port-glasgow-1806-?locale=en

Mary Hamilton      Dau      4   Renfrew
Robert Hamilton   Son      2   Renfrew
Williamina Taylor   Niece   15   Renfrew

This last person Williamina aka Wilhelmina TAYLOR "niece" is said to be the d/o William TAYLOR and Margaret HAMILTON and she had a sister Grace as well.

Name:    Williamina Taylor
Birth Date:    27 Jul 1835
Baptism Date:    10 Aug 1835
Baptism Place:    , Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

In 1841 Census, Williamina / Wilhelmina TAYLOR was in the home of Robert and Maria TAYLOR in Kilbarchan rather than William and Margaret -- maybe her parents died young and Robert was her uncle?? == https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a1546bcf4040b9d6e58304f/robt-taylor-1841-renfrewshire-kilbarchan-1781-?locale=en
