any Information on Mark Roberts b1811 of Penmaenmawr

Looking for any information on my ancestor - seems to have had some influence in the town (probably married to Ellin or Ellen Humphreys). Worked at the stone quarry.

Presumably you have some information on him already, what else is it you are after to save us spending time looking for what you already know.

Thanks Rosie,

For info Mark would have been my great, great grandfather.

I know he was born in 1811, died 17/1/1885 - married to Ellin Humphreys and had 2 sons (Joseph and Thomas). He built 2 chapels in Llanfairfechan, and part of the town was apparently named after him.

Apparently born in a house called Yr Hen Glawdd in Menai Bridge, Anglesea, although I believe the census shows this up as Bangor.

I have some details of his son Joseph who taught at the local school, but nothing really on his brother Thomas.

I know part of Penmaenmawr was bulldozed for the building of the A55, and that perhaps one of the chapels he built is now lost.

Trying really find out more about him, and reach back any further if possible as that's as far back as I have managed to get..

thanks, Steve

marriage in Llanbeblig by licence, both otp,  witnesses Robert Davies & Peter J(?) Thomas all signed except Ellin.

You can get a copy of the bond from NLW.

No baptism showing & it looks like he was non-conformist, various mentions in newspapers in connection with Gerizim, Llanfairfechan.

Steve why don't you contact Penmaenmawr Museum they may have something on your great, great Grandfather especially as he built two chapels. As far as I remember no chapels were bulldozed when they built the A55, so they have possibly been converted into living accommodation. Another two places you could look for information are the Archive in either Conwy town or Caernarvon. Sadly the Historic Society in Llanfairfechan has just folded, but all their information has gone to the Penmaenmawr Museum.

Thanks for the updates. The map seems to show Gerizim as being demolished. I have contacted the Museum at Penmaenmawr as suggested. I appreciate the help. S

Hi Dazzercat,  Gerizim Chapel is still standing & in use today, but is called Capel yr Annibynwyr. If you go on to the Google Maps site & put in Pant y Rhedyn School Llanfairfechan, the chapel can be seen to the left of the school on Penmaenmawr Road. There is also a chapel to the right of the school but that one isn't in use. Hope this helps & you have some answers from the museum.

Have you checked Welsh Journals?  https://journals.library.wales

Put "mark roberts" (including the "   ") in Search - should return 9 hits. One is in English, the rest in Welsh.
Haven't checked them all but one, at least, confirms "Hen Glawdd". Held in very high esteem in this article.
