Charles LYONS of Cranemore b. 1870 Immigrated to U.S. 1891
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Seeking info on Charles LYONS family, son of Charles Lyons and Mary KIRWAN of Cranemore.
b. 12 May 1870. Baptised 6 Nov 1870.
Brother Michael LYONS was baptised 9 May 1872.
Charles may have been married to a Mary BRENNAN who may have died soon after the marriage. Family story handed down is that Charles had a wife in Ireland who died.
Charles immigrated to U.S., arriving from Liverpool 20 April 1891.
In U.S., he married Maria Anastasia CORCORAN or COCHRAN in New York 1893.
I am hoping this will also lead me to more info on Maria CORCORAN and her family, and where in Ireland she immigrated from.
Thanking you sincerely in advance.

.........son of Charles Lyons and Mary KIRWAN of Cranemore.
b. 12 May 1870. Baptised 6 Nov 1870.

Where did the birth date of 12th May 1870 come from?

His mother Mary registered his birth as 5th December 1870.

Something strange going on  ???

Brother Michael LYONS was baptised 9 May 1872.

You're partially correct - Michael baptised born on 9th May but in 1873, baptised 11th May 1873 (see attachment)
However he was born on 18th May 1873 at Cranmore and his mother again was the informant.

Edited to Add:
See https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Ireland-birth-records.html

But some registrations that appear to have been recorded promptly after the birth may also be incorrect; families were fined if they recorded the birth outside set time limits so would register a false date of birth to avoid hefty penalties.

Sandra, thank you so much for your replies. The most difficult thing I would love to find is some evidence of the arrival of Mary Anastasia Corcoran from Ireland. Mary's birth date on the 1900 Census is Feb 1868. She and Charles were both naturalized in 1904. Trying to discover which county she came from and who were her parents. Thank you again!

Do you see any possible siblings for Maria Corcoran? anyone in their households or next door to them by that name? Can you find an image of their marriage record - church or civil - who were the witnesses?

I guess the index of her death record that Sandra posted has all the information that was on the original. If it included even the street address, then I would guess it would include her mother's maiden name if it was there. or her father's given name. You could send for the record itself, if you think it is worth the chance there is more information on it than on the transcript at familysearch.

"Anastasia" might indicate she was from the south east of Ireland:

I know the dates don't match what you have but see a Maria Corcoran born July 1869 in Knockroe to Michael Corcoran and Kate Byrne .
Knockroe and Craanmore are very close to one another .They are townlands on the slopes of Mt. Leinster in the Blackstairs ;Knockroe is on the Borris side whilst Cranmore is on the Kildavin/Bunclody side .

Might be worth a look as many Irish emigrants married a person "from home" in the USA .
