Greenock Poorhouse Inmates
« on: Friday 12 November 21 11:58 GMT (UK) »
Recent research has uncovered that my wife's GGGrandfather died in the Greenock Poorhouse in 1919. A search of the 1911 census has him as an inmate on that date. I'm keen to see whether his time in the poorhouse was sporadic or constant. I'm also keen to see if an of his children or family were with him.

Does anyone know how I would access the records.

He is; John Scott born around 1854, Ireland.
Married Mary McCurdy in Port Glasgow, Thirteenth December 1884, 7 Scott’s
Lane, Port Glasgow
Died - Greenock Poorhouse, 8th October 1919,
Census 1911 - has him as an inmate.

Any assistance gratefully accepted!

Records: The whereabouts of any surviving records of the poorhouse appears to be unknown. However, some records dating from around 1860 relating to the asylum/hospital part of the institution are held by Glasgow City Archives - The Mitchell Library.

"The records are stored in the Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow (near Charing Cross railway station) in space leased from Glasgow City Council. Please note the staff of Glasgow City Council do not have access to the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archives.

As the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archivist spends much of his time in hospitals, clinics, and NHS offices, therefore, he can not be present at the Mitchell Library for the whole of the working week. Accordingly, it is essential that intending users should contact the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Archivist before making a visit".

I don't check RootsChat as often as I should.

Regarding John Scott and Mary McCurdy:

On the marriage Certificate Mary's father is named as Thomas, a carpenter/farmer, not reported as deceased, and her mother as Rose Scally. On the death Certificate the father is given as Patrick and the mother Rose Scally.

Mary Jane McCurdy was born was born on 18th April 1866 to DANIEL McCurdy and Rose Scally in Cushendall. She had five siblings that I know of:

Patrick born 1863 moved to New Zealand married Mary Ann Murray and produced 10 children. After Mary Ann died in 1925 he married Catherine May Lester in 1937, without issue.

Mary was the second born.

Daniel was borm in 1868, married quite late to Elizabeth Matha McCormick in 1928, without issue.

Rosetta born 1871 married Neil Murray in Cushendall in 1897 then moved to Scotland where the couple had three children before moving back to Antrim sometime around 1904 producing another three.

James born 1875 also married quite late in 1930 to Mary Jane Webb, without issue.

Alexander, the youngest, moved to Scotland where he married Mary O'Neill in 1905 in Glasgow. They then moved to Edinburgh producing one daughter, Margaret, soon after they moved to New Zealand where they produced another four children. Sometime after 1912 they returned to Scotland where son, James, was born in 1916 in Edinburgh.

Hope this was of interest.

Here's the link to the marriage on 4 January 1897 at Cushendun RC Church.

The 1911 census has them at High Street? (Ardclinis, Antrim) with their six children.

The household return form indicates that nine children were born to the couple, six still living.

No High Street townland in the Ardclinis Electoral Division.
