Jones/West Chertsey
« on: Friday 12 November 21 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I’m looking for the ancestors of Thomas Jones and Sarah West who married in Chertsey in 1762. Both of them were born in Chertsey in 1740, Thomas was the son of John Jones and Sarah was the daughter of Thomas West no mothers name. A John Jones married an Ann Thebridge in Chertsey 1730 maybe she was his mother?

I’m interested to find out more about the couples parents and especially their mothers names

I think the surname Thebridge is not a common name in Surrey at this time

I was hoping the birth years of John's children & maybe Ann would provide a clue to confirm Ann as the one you mention.
Looking at the records on freereg the short answer is no. There would appear to be a number of records father John going back far earlier than 1730. However assuming 1730 is correct the baptisms after that date are John 1731, Anne 1734,
William 1736, Elizabeth 1738, Thomas 1740, Edward 1744, James 1746, Richard 1748, Mary 1750  but no mother’s name!

I did find a possible burial for John?
John JONES, senior   Burial no age   12 Dec 1791   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter :

Two possible burials but no detail, for Ann, excluding a third who is noted as the wife of William
Ann JONES   Burial   15 Aug 1754   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter

Ann JONES   Burial   11 Jan 1807   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter

The only baptism I can find on family search is some 30 miles from Chertsey?
Ann Thebridge   Christening13 April 1701Sandridge, Hertfordshire, Father:Richard Thebridge Mother: Dorothey

Thank you Colin! Yes it’s not easy to find the person especially with a common name like John.

The name Thebridge also appears in the London/Middlesex area but no Ann. The Ann Thebridge from Hertfordshire is a possibility or a baptism of her in Surrey is not indexed yet or online ?

There’s is also another Thomas West baptism 1695 son of Nicholas so I have two possibilities now ???

I can’t find a marriage of Thomas West and Ann in Surrey or surrounding counties before 1732 that could fit

I'm not sure if this from freereg will help?

Nicholas West also had a daughter Sarah 1693, which was the first West baptism in Chertsey. There are a number of burials there1687 to 1837, including below but no detail on freereg.

Nicholas WEST   Burial   21 Dec 1732   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter

Samuel West had the following children.
Mary 1698, Samuel 1701, Thomas 1704 and Alice 1709. An Alice was buried 25 Jul 1719

WEST – no name, wife of Samuel   Burial   18 Nov 1744   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter

Three Samuel West burials 12 Jan 1749 & 4 May 1751 & 18 Dec 1762

Thomas West’s baptised after 1732.
1738 father Samuel, likely son of Samuel above
1768 burial 1768 father Thomas mother Elizabeth, likely Thomas 1732.
1772 ………………………………………  ditto
1794 Parents James & Mary

There were 3 Thomas WEST Burials Chertsey : St Peter (excluding one infant)
05 Apr 1736, obviously this could not have been the Thomas to have children from 1732
my guess would be Thomas 1695.

02 Jul 1782, my guess Thomas 1704 husband of Ann below.

24 Dec 1797, my guess Thomas 1732

As posted. I think this was the wife of Thomas and mother of children 1732 plus.
Ann WEST wife of Thomas   Burial   24 Nov 1765   Surrey   Chertsey : St Peter

The problem is proving it?

Thank you Colin!

Samuel West married Jane/Jane Simons in Chertsey 1694.

It’s not easy to find out which Thomas West is the right one, he also had just daughters so no son he can name after his father :-\
