Edwardina/Victorian Theatre
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 14:16 GMT (UK) »
My interest is in Edwardian/Victorian provincial theatre artists.

I am researching Harry Harrop and Ethel Vinroy, the stage names of two artistes who married between 1900 and 1910.  Unfortunately, I am struggling to establish their real names.

The only clue I have found is that in The Stage newspaper, Ethel posted a notice to say that her father, Alfred Davis, (late Somerset House, London) died on 12 March 1916 in his 89th year.

I cannot, however, find a death for Alfred Davis in that period of the correct age.

Any help anybody can give me would be much appreciated.

Maybe he didn't die in the UK, have you tried the spelling "Davies"

Do you have a rough age for Ethel if her father was in his late 80's?

I believe Ethel was born around 1876.

I have tried spellings of Davies, but with no joy.

Must admit I have not looked for a death overseas

An 1881 census for the father might help then but as you say with stage names very difficult to find the real people  :-\

Where did she appear as an artiste - in London or all over the country?  Any hints that might help,
did she have children for example.

I've found a 1901 census for Harry and Ethel Harrop and their son Harry in Ramsgate.

They are both theatrical artists, Harry born in Harrogate in 1877 and Ethel in Grimsby in 1877 and Harry junior in Grimsby in 1900.

What I can't find of course are any birth records in the names of Harrop for father and son.

Have you located young Harry in 1911, I can see his parents as Harrop.

I think Ethel is Minnie Ethel Davis, born 1875 in Caistor, Lincolnshire.
Father Alfred Davis, a Clerk at Somerset House (1861 census). Residing in Lambeth. Born c1828.

There's an 1894 marriage for a Minnie Ethel Davis to a Herbert Vince Taylor in Clee, Lincolnshire.
But it appears the groom may be from Hertfordshire. Father was a Baptist Minister from Deptford.
