Sarah Monie Goudie puzzle
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Help needed.
Sarah was born illegitimately in Ayr in 1909 Mothers name Jane ( Jeanie) Goudie.
It is appears Sarah was adopted by George and Charlotte Paterson in Clackmannanshire some time after 1911 as she does not show on the 1911 census.
Sarah married James Gordon in Tillicoultry in 1931
On her marriage certificate her name is Helen Paterson formerly Sarah Monie Goudie.
My puzzle is how did she get from Ayr to Clackmannanshire ?
Her mother Jane emigrated to Canada where she married and had a family

Helen Paterson formerly Sarah Monie Goudie was born in Ayr in 1909 illegitimately
Mother was Jane Goudie
I understand she was adopted by George and Charlotte Paterson sometime after 1911
She married James Norman Gordon from Clackmannan in Tillicoultry in 1936
On her marriage certificate her name is Helen Paterson formerly Sarah Monie Paterson
My puzzle is how did she get from Ayr to Clackmannanshire
I have not been able to find her on 1911 census
I know that her mother emigrated to Canada where she married and had a family

Adoption in Scotland only became legal in 1930.

Presumably you have the 1911 entry for the Patersons & she isn’t with them - is that correct?

What year did Jane Goudie emigrate

If she was registered as Sarah,  and isn’t with the Paterson’s in 1911 - Her name change to Helen must have occurred not long after her birth as it would have been confusing to change it as she got older so have you looked for her under Helen in 1911?

George & Charlotte Paterson married in 1902 but I notice 2 surnames are shown for her - Kennedy & Mitchell.

Any significance in the middle name Monie

This seems to be the only birth registration near to the year you mention
SARAH MONEY GOUDIE   1909   Ayr

This is the only Jane in Ayr, no others of the Gouldie name present
GOUDIE   JEANNIE   1911   1   Ayr   Ayr
GOUDIE   JANE   1911   34   Ayr   Ayr

George & Charlotte Patterson are on the 1911 census with their large family.

PS: Probably better to merge your two posts, it may lead to confusion.

I have the 1911 census with no mention of Sarah - Helen which made me think the adoption was after 1911
Not sure exactly when Jane emigrated estimate about 1915
I believe Charlotte was a widow when she married George
Monie was the surname of Sarah - Helen’s grandmother, that is the connection I have
Sarah was born in 1909 not 1905 as I stated in the original post

Your opening post gives the impression Jane married in Canada - is there anything to support that?  Do you know when & where Jane was born?

There is a marriage in Canada Jan 1919. Janes parents Isabel Money and James Goudie

Jane is 26.

Jane was born in Girvan Ayrshire in 1890
Parents James Goudie and Isabella Monie

The information from Canada came from someone else’s tree
I believe she married in 1919 to John Farquharson originally from Banff
They had 3 children
John born 1917
Ailsa born 1919
Gordon born 1921

Jane died in Canada in 1988
