I Goggled and found this snippet but no link.

"There could be a number of reasons for a couple to obtain a licence: they might wish to marry quickly (and avoid the three weeks' delay by the calling of banns); they might wish to marry in a parish away from their home parish; or, because a licence required a higher payment than banns, they might choose to obtain one."

A Special Licence denotes permission given by the (Church of Ireland Archbishop) or in UK the Archbishop of Canterbury to get married in a particular place, such as outside your own parish or the chapel of a school or college, or indeed not in a Church of England.
They were/are very expensive.
Were the couple of different denominations (Catholic, C of I or even C of E), that could also be a reason?
Cheers

Thanks Guy. I wasn't able to find the groom in the 1901 census but I'm thinking he may have been protestant and the bride RC.

If you want to post his details (name, date of birth or approx. age, occupation?) we could try to look for him in 1901.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks aghadowey

I was helping a friend with her research and I've just left a message with her to see if she did find the groom. If not I'll post the details here.
