PEDLAR - Frithelstock, ca 1700

Jane PEDLAR was bap in Frithelstock, 05.Nov.1696. Her parents are recorded as 'Jo:' and 'Fran:'

I cannot find a marriage for a couple whose names could be abbreviated to the form recorded. I have, however, found that they appear to have baptized 5 children in total:-

22 Oct 1694  Alexander to John
05 Nov 1696 Jane         to Jo: and Fran:
13 Sep 1699  John        to John and Frances
13 Jan  1703  Richard    to Jo:
05 Dec  1711  Emanuel  to John and Frances

The only possible marriage I have found is

22 Jul 1690 John PEDLER to Ann HARVEY

Is 'Ann' the elusive 'Frances' ?

Can anyone help, please?

Further to my earlier post, it appears that there was a baptism in South Tawton

26 Mar 1673  An HARVEY to Humphry & Jane

Is this the reason for the use of the name 'Jane' in 1696?

Parish register image for Frithelstock 05 Nov1696 has. -  Jane the daughter of Jo: Pedlar was baptised the Fifth day of November Anno Domini 1696.  There is no mention of another parent.

The next entry for a Thomas Lang gives parents as Jo: & Jane

Rosie,

FindMyPast has a photocopy of the Frithelstock PR. The entry for Jane is quite legible, and I have to agree with their transcriber that it appears to show 'Jo: Pedlar & Fran:'. Could you have another look, please?

FindMyPast have 2 results for that baptism.

The page that F M P have transcribed as Jo & Fran has entries with dates covering a 3 year period

The page with that entry starts off with several christening entries for 1695 & 1696 crossed through.
Then there is the entry for Jane followed by other entries for 1696 & 1697.

Then following a heading for burials anno domini 1765 followed by burial entries for 1696 & 1697.

Those entries which cover 3 years baptisms followed by 3 years burials have presumably been written out some time later and are more like some form of Bishops transcripts.

Have you looked at the left hand side page of that page, the dates on that are 1710 & 1711

ADDED The page after is for 1706 and 1707

I believe you've cracked it; it's certainly PEDLAR, and I think the surname is MOORE.

What made you look there? A brilliant piece of detective work. I've just done a search for the forename 'Francis' and found the entry, but I hadn't thought of doing that earlier. One keeps learning at this game!

Have you reported the error to FindMyPast?

Very many thanks

garlands - I searched for marriages between a John and a Frances (allowing for spelling variants). I've found after over 20 years of researching that you often need to 'think outside of the box'.  :D
